What is a Dental Crown?

A crown, sometimes known as a “cap” is a tooth-shaped restoration that is placed over the natural tooth. Once a crown is cemented in place, it completely encases the visible portion of a tooth. Crowns can be used on a tooth with damage too great to be treated with a traditional filling, to protect a tooth after root canal therapy or to hold a dental bridge in place.

What is a Dental Bridge?

When teeth are lost for any reason, they leave a gap in the mouth that can cause further problems. Dental bridges are prosthetic teeth used to “bridge” the gap between the remaining teeth. This allows patients to eat, speak and smile, and it prevents the remaining teeth from shifting into the open space. A bridge can be held in place by dental crowns placed on the two surrounding teeth or by dental implants, which are surgically placed in the jaw.

How Long Do Crowns and Bridges Last?

With good home care and regular dental visits, you can expect high-quality crowns and bridges to last for many years. As with natural teeth, be sure to brush at least twice a day, floss daily, and visit our office at least every six months so we can check your restorations.

What Can I Expect When I Get a Crown Or Bridge?

At Smile Design Dental Spa, we use top-quality porcelain restorations, which require at least two visits to our office. During your first appointment, we will prepare your tooth or teeth for your crown or bridge. An impression of your tooth will be made and sent to our dental lab for your restoration to be custom-made to perfectly fit your mouth. On your next visit, we will secure your new crown or bridge in place.

Are Crowns and Bridges Expensive?

Because each patient and each case is unique, the costs can vary. When you come in for a consultation, we will provide you with the exact cost for your restorations. To help cover costs, we work with most dental insurance plans and are on the Delta Dental Premier plan. Be sure to ask our team for more information about payment options.
